A visit to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival opened my eyes to the wonderful
world of fiber. My first weaving class resulted from a chance remark at a party
and this, in turn, led us to visit an actual weaving shop. There I found looms,
wonderful fibers, classes and workshop offerings, all of which were designed to
help me become a competent weaver. My desire to find an absorbing hobby that offered
mental challenges, creativity, variety, and a useful hand product had been fulfilled!
Another strong influence on me was a friend and weaving mentor who lived nearby
in Maryland and who provided assistance and honest critiques of my work. I was off
and running, so to speak.
During the past fourteen years I have attended weaving conferences and workshops
to improve my skills and to learn new techniques. Membership in weaving guilds and
the interaction with the members have also broadened my weaving horizons. I am a
member of several weaving guilds, as shown below. Burnt Chimney Studios has become
a Trailsite of 'Round The Mountain(RTM) and will be on its newly established Artisan's
Trail of Franklin County. I was juried into Heartwood, the artisan's center which
is under construction in Abingdon, VA, and which is affiliated with RTM.
I enjoy exploring the use of color and how color can enhance different weave structures.
Creating unique handwovens rather than production items is my focus. I weave scarves,
stoles, throws, towels, table linens, and baby blankets. My handwovens may be found
at several galleries and craft shows in the Greater Roanoke area.
